PLACE OF INTEREST~(Kuantan)

Kuantan
Kuantan, Pahang's bustling capital beside Sungai Kuantan, is situated about midway up the East Coast of Malaysia. The commercial centre of town is dominated at one end by Wisma Sri Pahang, the main State Government offices, and at the other by the Teruntum Kompleks, a multi-storey shopping arcade. Facing the tree-lined padang on Jalan Mahkota are some of Kuantan's earliest buildings; the colonial-style Courthouse and the JKR Building. Old-style shophouse line Jalan Besar up to the Bus Station. Around here are a number of handicraft shops specialising in locally-produced batik. Behind the Bus Station, and running alongside Sungai Kuantan, is a long walkway shaded by palms, a garden, picnic area and children's amusements at the Jalan Tanah Puteh end. Also flanking the river are a number of food stalls serving local cuisine and a boat that serves as a flaoting discotheque.
Other town attractions include the Hindu temple on Jalan Tanah Puteh, Buddhist temples on Jalan Bukit Setongkol and Jalan Bukit Ubi, and the Stadium Darul Makmur. Take Jalan Teluk Sisek out of town and follow Jalan Dato Abdullah to Tamam Gelora at Tanjung Api, where are a lotus lake, food stalls and shaded picnic areas beside a long sandy beach. There is also a modern mosque at Tanjung Api with tiered pyramidal roof. Futher along Jalan Teluk Sisek is the Taman Seni Budaya, a cultural centre, and on Jalan Teluk Chempedak is the home of the Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) overlooking the Royal Pahang Golf Club. Turn right at the golf course for Taman Teruntum, a jungle park with a mini zoo and picnic facilities.
